Biotin (B7) is a vital part of a healthy metabolism and is responsible for creating important enzymes. Biotin is often used to strengthen hair and nails. It is also called Vitamin H (for hair). Many systems benefit from biotin including the skin, nerves, digestive tract, and cellular metabolism.

Is it necessary to take extra biotin if biotin is already in my multi vitamin (or Nutrafol)?

Yes, Dr. Bauman recommends high doses of biotin for people with hair loss or hair thinning problems. Some studies suggest that people with hair loss may have a harder time absorbing biotin, therefore additional biotin may be helpful. Some professionals recommend up to 20,000 mcg per day.

Because biotin (as one of the B vitamins) is water soluble, any excess that your body doesn’t use will be excreted in your urine.

What are the side effects of taking too much biotin?

Possible diarrhea, cramps, skin rash or mild acne are possible but very rare side effects of biotin in addition to interfering with certain blood testing.
